Free Pattern - Lattice Beanie (Pt. 1)

Hi Guys,

Time to release another one of my original patterns up as a free blog post!

This month I am releasing my Lattice Beanie Pattern.

This post is quite long so I've split up into 2 parts for easier navigation.

Part 1 - is below - this covers the pattern information and the lattice stitch special instructions.

Part 2 - Can be found HERE and covers the remainder of the beanie pattern.

This pattern was written up back when I was still doing made to order patterns. It follows a very similar base pattern to by animal beanie series. The below bunny beanie can also be found as a free pattern HERE

The beanie is a basic top down beanie, working Hdc stitches until you have a circle the required width, then working down and creating this delicate lattice work panel. Earflaps and Ties are added last. I love adding a big fluffy Pom Pom on top to finish it off.

When I was first making these made to order, I originally used an Aran weight Superwash merino, such as Rico Essentials Merino Aran or MillaMia Naturally Soft Aran. However Superwash merino tends to work up thinner than a pure wool or acrylic yarn does, especially if you are a tight crocheter like me. So for the average crocheter, I would actually suggest a DK weight acrylic yarn for this beanie and a 4.5mm hook.

The most complex part of this pattern is the Lattice Work. So for this pattern I have included detailed instructions for the lattice work separately at the beginning of the pattern as well as an abbreviated version throughout.

The full pattern is written out below for FREE, however if you prefer a printable PDF without the Ad's, you can get the download via the below links as usual!

Notes;

Beanie is made top down with the tassels and pom pom added at the end. Beanie is crocheted in the round, with each round joined with a SlSt.

I made this beanie with an Aran weight yarn and 5mm hook, however the Yarn was very thin Aran weight and I’m a very tight crocheter, so I’m suggesting a DK weight yarn and 4.5mm hook for the average crocheter.

Chain stitches at the end of the row are not included in the stitch count. Chain stitches at the beginning of a row will count as a stitch and noted accordingly. A number in front of a stitch – e.g. 2Hdc – means you work 2 Hdc stitches in one stitch. A number following a stitch – e.g. Hdc 2 – means work a Hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. Sequences between asterisks are repeated the number of times shown – e.g. *2Sc, Sc* x5. Sequences in brackets are worked into a single stitch. E.g. (Dc, Sc).

Stitch count is included in brackets after the row instructions. Step by Step instructions for the Lattice Stitch is shown on the next page.

Pattern is written for size 0-3m with the other sizes in brackets. 0-3m (3-6m, 6-12m, 1-4y, 4-10y)

Special Stitches;

Lattice Stitch

You can refer back to this section when directed to throughout the pattern.

Photo references are numbered throughout.

Sc 2, YO twice, insert hook under the first Sc post from 2 rows prior, from right to left (1&2), YO and pull up loop – 4 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 3 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 2 loops on hook (3). YO twice, skip 3 Sc posts and insert into the next (4) from right to left, YO and pull up loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through 2 loops of hook, YO and pull through all 3 remaining loops on hook (5). Skip one stitch (6) and Sc 3. (7)

*YO twice, insert hook under the last Sc post you worked from right to left. YO and pull up loop – 4 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 3 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 2 loops on hook. (8) YO twice, skip 3 Sc posts and insert into the next from right to left, YO and pull up loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through 2 loops of hook, YO and pull through all 3 remaining loops on hook. Skip one stitch and Sc 3.*

Repeat from * to* to complete round. The last Fptr2tog will work into the same Sc post as the first Fptr2tog in the round. (9).

Round 2 of Lattice Stitch – Lattice Pattern B

First Fptr2tog in Round 2 of lattice stitch – You will be working into the Fptr2tog stitches from the previous lattice row.

YO twice, insert hook under the last Fptr2tog from the previous lattice stitch row, from right to left (10), YO and pull up loop – 4 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 3 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 2 loops on hook. YO twice, insert hook into the first Fptr2tog from the previous round, from right to left, (11) YO and pull up loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through all 4 remaining loops (12) Skip the joining stitch and Sc 3.

Second and subsequent Fptr2tog in Round 2 of lattice stitch –

*YO twice, insert hook under the last Fptr2tog post you worked in previous trellis stitch row from right to left, YO and pull up loop – 4 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 3 loops on hook. YO and pull through 2 loops on hook – 2 loops on hook. YO twice, insert hook under the next Fptr2tog post from previous lattice row right to left, YO and pull up loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through all 4 remaining loops. Skip the unworked stitch and Sc 3.

Repeat from * to* to complete round. After the last Sc 3, you will join to first stitch in round with a slip stitch. (13)

Round 3 of Lattice Stitch – Lattice Pattern C

This round is exactly the same as Lattice Pattern B – however you will Sc 2 before starting the above pattern. This round will end on a Sc 1.  (14)

You will continue to alternate between Lattice pattern B & C when directed for each lattice round in the beanie pattern.

Invisible Join

This is a great technique for joining in the round when you do not want to create a visible join of your final round.

A way to join a round with a ‘fake’ stitch.

  1. Once completed the last stitch in the round. Cut the yarn (with 10cm tail) and pull through. Thread onto an embroidery/yarn needle.
  2. Thread needle underneath the ‘v’ of the first stitch in the round.
  3. Thread back down through the middle of the ‘v’ in the last stitch in the round, bringing to the front. This creates a fake stitch. This does not count as a stitch in the pattern.
  4. Thread needle back under the ’v’ of the 2nd to last stitch in round so your end is on the wrong side of your work. Tie off and weave in ends.
